What is vascular surgery?

Vascular surgery is the diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases that affect the arteries and veins. It is a speciality extended from general surgery.

Why should I see a specialist?

Vascular Surgeons are registered with the Specialists Accreditation Board and Academy of Medicine under General surgery and they are trained to perform both vascular and general surgery. All vascular surgeons complete a minimum of nine years of surgical training following medical school, including advanced surgical training in General surgery and an overseas fellowship in vascular surgery.
This extensive training not only provides vascular surgeons with excellent technical skills but also enables the vascular surgeon to treat and manage the entire spectrum of vascular problems. A vascular surgeon is not only well trained to treat this wide range of conditions but is well equipped to handle complications if they arise.

What questions should I ask my specialist?

You should ask your specialist about his training, area of interest, the number of cases he has performed and his results. The surgeon should explain risk, benefits of treatment, alternatives and possible complications.
